Things You Need to Know

Thanks for the New Orleans suggestions--both here in the comments and those of you who contacted me directly. Keep them coming. I really want to get a handle on what has happened there, and what still needs to happen, so I can speak in an informed manner in the days to come.

I'll be blogging regularly from the region when I'm down there and we're preparing a special section of our site to commemorate the anniversary of the hurricane and ensuing floods.

In other news,
  • if Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are starting a "team", I bet I can get my wife's permission to play;
  • non-profit hospitals are in a tizzy about the IRS asking them to explain what exactly the "community benefit" is that they're providing;
  • people in Tennessee are shocked to find out that their government gives money to non-profits to do the work the government once did;
  • the New York Times seems surprised that Melinda Gates--with her Duke MBA and a proven track-record of managerial success at Microsoft--is "articulate and knowledgeable." I'm sure a similar piece, where we marvel at the fact that Bill Gates understands spreadsheets, is coming any day;
  • and finally, I leave you with this and this.
My work here is done. Enjoy your weekend.

I found your blog when seaching for info on the charity "Feed the Children". Their pitch letter was so infuriating. You would think we were in the throes of the Great Depression with millions of people unemployed and starving children dropping in the streets. I asked if these were the children of the 300 lb women-the children wearing expensive sneakers and carrying their own cell phones? I realize that people lose their jobs and can go through tough times, but there are thousands and thousands of employers out there begging for people to work. There are programs like Food Stamps and WIC. Why on earth does the Director of this organization make $176,000 and write letters to people who make less than $40,000 begging for money for hungry children devastated by the horrible state of our country (what a load)?

I told them I will give locally and/or to the Salvation Army only.

Thanks for the place to vent!
