An Animal Charity That Hates People
Try to save an animal's life and your reward is millions of dollars? That's what the North Shore Animal League would have Mary Allie of Michigan believe. She gave them a few bucks, happy about their no-kill policies, and was promptly thanked by the non-profit group.
How'd they thank her? Why, they sold her name and address to a bunch of sweepstakes companies, who have sent her tens of letters alerting her to the fact that she "could" have already won nearly $5 million, and all she has to do to claim her winnings is send in some more cash, this time to the sweepstakes companies. Thank you so much for your generosity--here's some predatory junk mail.
Here at Charity Navigator, we were already unimpressed with this group, giving them a 1-star rating. Sadly, this is not because of their willingness to violate the rights of donors like Ms. Allie. The low rating, however, is because they spend so much money on costly fund-raising materials and direct mail, which maybe they wouldn't have to do if they valued their donors enough to respect them, and therefore keep them in the fold.

I have donated to North Shore for a number of years and never received any mailings from them as mentioned in your article.
Yes, North Shore Animal has done this to my Great Uncle. He's 87 and now we can't get the mail to stop. He gets stacks and stacks of it every day. We can't even get North Shore to stop even though we've followed all the instructions in their Privacy Policy. Still it keeps coming...
