Don't the Feds Call This Money Laundering?

The IRS has decided to investigate the "work" of a foundation in Utah. It seems that this foundation, the Southern Utah Foundation, received $500,000 in charitable contributions from the Leavitt family, who are rather prominent in the area. The foundation then gave that money to Southern Utah University, which, in turn, gave the money to students to be used as vouchers for housing at apartments owned by the aforementioned Leavitt family.

Got it? Rich family gives cash to foundation (gets tax deduction), the foundation gives it to college, the college gives it to its students, and they in turn have to use it to rent housing from the rich family.

Stinks, huh? Stinks even more when you realize that the most famous member of the Leavitt family, and prominently involved in these decisions, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, is Mike Leavitt.

Who's Mike Leavitt, you might ask? He's the U.S. secretary of health and human services. Like, right now, he has that job.

Oh.
