Last-Minute Gift Idea

Joel Waldfogel over at Slate has a pretty convincing argument that gift-giving is a microeconomic disaster. As Waldfogel writes, “most of the time, people choose purchases for themselves and only buy things that they expect to value at or above the price they pay. With gifts, by contrast, recipients end up with items that givers guess that the recipients might appreciate. Both activities generate spending, but not of equal benefit.

In other words, the odds are unlikely that you’re ever going to buy somebody something that brings them as much pleasure as what they could buy themselves. The best gifts are therefore cash, or something that is difficult to measure with traditional cost-benefit analysis, like say, charity.

That’s why I’m making a plug today that you last-minute gift-givers use Charity Navigator to find a charity to give to, in the name of those last few names on your list. And thanks to our new partnership with Network For Good, you can even give to several different charities, all in different people’s names, with one simple credit card donation. It’s fast, it’s easy, it’s smart, and it’s a whole lot more likely to please your recipients than going down to the mall and picking out yet another candle or bottle of hand lotion. Plus, your mom will be proud of you, and that’s as good as it gets.

Using the Charity Navigator advanced search features, you really can find the perfect charity for your loved ones. You can search by locality, by cause, by rating, or even by keyword. Or you can search by all of these things.

Your mom a breast cancer survivor, living in Pennsylvania? Here’s a group she’d like. Have a sister who’s a Californian, a teacher and loves kids? Here’s a 4-star charity for you. Your boss a big Chicago White Sox fan? How about making a donation to this group in his name? The possibilities here are endless.

Show you care about the recipient, with a gift. Show you care about the world, by making it a gift to a high-performing charity. And show you’re smart, by using our site to find exactly the right choice for your recipient’s interests.

This is a bad idea! Network for Good slices a 4.75% fee off the top! Probably best to send a check to a local charity or drop off non-perishable food at a food pantry. Remember that credit card companies get their cut.

From the website:

Are there fees when I donate through Network for Good? Yes. Network for Good charges a 4.75% tax-deductible fee for credit card transactions, which you can add or deduct from your donation. This fee is used to pay banks, credit card companies and other administrative costs. Charity Navigator and Network for Good do not profit from fees.

Network for Good charges a $10 fee for online check transactions containing one donation and a $5 fee per donation for transactions containing multiple donations. The online check fees cover check vendor, banking and administrative costs. Charity Navigator and Network for Good do not profit from them.

So true. Giving to charity is a really good idea. So are gift cards.
